Blood Donation Campaign for Thalassemia Patients at Al Ain UniversityIn response to the call made by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai for donating blood to thalassemia patients, Al Ain University, in collaboration with Tawam Hospital’s mobile unit, organized a two-day blood donation campaign for thalassemia patients. AAU faculty members, students, and administrative staff responded to the campaign.

Professor Ghaleb El Refae, AAU President, said that the campaign comes in answer to the initiative started by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai to donate blood to thalassemia patients. It is an embodiment of our humanitarian and Islamic principles of solidarity and helping one another. It is an exemplary form of humanitarian cooperation that needs to be instilled in the students to realize the responsibility they have toward the community.

The team of Tawam’s Hospital’s mobile unit supervised the donation process, and they volunteered useful health tips for the students especially with regard to thalassemia and the importance of blood donation. In addition, the students were informed about the places for donating blood, the frequency, and the health requirements to be considered a donor. Through this campaign, AAU has not only collected blood donations, but also raised awareness among students.

Prof. El Refae added that taking part in humanitarian initiatives is in tandem with AAU’s values aiming at enhancing social interaction and solidarity highlighted by our religion and underlined by the leadership of the UAE. It is our role, as an educational institution and a member of the community, to convey these values to the students and put them on the right track to help achieve a harmonious community.
