Umbilical Cord Blood and Hereditary Diseases Lecture at AAUAs part of the AAU’s thalassemia awareness campaign, the Deanship of Student Affairs in Abu Dhabi Campus, in cooperation with MedCells International, organized a lecture on “the importance of umbilical cord blood in the treatment of hereditary diseases”. Faculty members, staff, and students attended the talk.

Mr. Ziad Abu Zaytoon presented an explanation on storing stem cells from the umbilical cord blood at birth and the importance of that in the treatment of several hereditary diseases. Stem cells from the umbilical cord blood can be used in tissue transplant for the treatment of a variety of children’s disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia, and thalassemia, as well as inborn metabolism disorders such as FAODs. He added that umbilical cord blood, just like bone marrow, is a rich source of stem cells; however, it saves children the complications associated with bone barrow transplant.
