Introduction
Al Ain University (AAU) has demonstrated a strong commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through multi-year initiatives in research, innovation, infrastructure development, and partnerships. From 2021 to 2025, AAU expanded its campus infrastructure, fostered entrepreneurship, and strengthened collaborations with industry and government to drive sustainable industrialization. These efforts align with Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings indicators for SDG 9 – including research on innovation, patent generation, university spin-offs, industry collaboration income, and infrastructure investment timeshighereducation.com. In 2021, AAU was ranked 2nd in the UAE for overall THE Impact Rankings aau.ac.ae, reflecting the University’s growing impact on the SDGs. The following report details AAU’s key contributions to SDG 9 in the period 2021–2025, organized by relevant THE indicators and initiatives.
Research and Innovation Initiatives (Patents and Spin-offs)
University Research and Patents: AAU has actively promoted research in fields related to industry and innovation, leading to intellectual property outputs. Faculty and student researchers are encouraged to pursue patents and practical applications of their work. For example, AAU has established an Intellectual Property policy and a support framework for technology transfer – the University’s Office of External Relations manages patent filings and research commercialization on behalf of inventors aau.ac.ae.
