Al Ain university (AAU) actively engaged in the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC 2024), to emphasize its commitment to environmental issues and sustainable development. The university is also a member of the Universities Climate Network, a network of 33 local universities collaborating in education, research, and community service in environmental protection and climate change mitigation.

A Global Engineering Project between Al Ain University and Mount Union University Entitled “Water and Flood Alarm System”
The first-ever Global Engineering Project in the Middle East was successfully hosted by the College of Engineering at Al Ain University - Abu Dhabi Campus, in collaboration with the University of Mount Union in the United States. This course is aimed at providing engineering students with both the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to become competent global engineers and to work effectively with international partners from diverse disciplines.
Months prior to the event, students from both universities were grouped into teams to discuss and share ideas on the project's design and execution. The event spanned two days, with students working together under the guidance of faculty committees from both universities to construct and test the proposed "Water and Flood Warning System." The system, equipped with load sensors, a solar power system, wireless communication, a sensor station, and a monitoring station, was designed to detect water and floods in a timely manner and provide warnings to people in the area.
The project provided students with an opportunity to experience engineering within a different culture and learn to work with different team dynamics.
A Student visit to “WETEX”
The College of Engineering at Al Ain University in Abu Dhabi campus organized a field trip to the Water, Energy, and Environmental Technology Exhibition "WETEX" and Dubai Solar Show, under the supervision of Eng. Esraa Hijah, Eng. Esra AlNashash and Eng. Huda AlHeeh.
During the visit, a group of students from different engineering programs explored the latest innovations and technologies in the engineering industry. Students attended the seminars to learn more about various innovative solutions and technologies in energy, water, environment, clean and renewable energy, smart grid, electric vehicles, and sustainably. Through this visit, the engineering students were given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the various facets of the engineering industry."

AAU at "Sustainability, Water Governance & Policy" Session
The AAU Deanship of Student Affairs in Abu Dhabi campus participated in the ‘Hiwar’ session entitled “Sustainability, Water Governance & Policy” organized by the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group. Experts and professionals in the field of water and sustainability were present at the session which focused on water governance and sustainability policies and provided a platform for knowledge sharing of key issues.
The session also shed light on a number of relevant matters including the Abu Dhabi water regulations and monitoring, the importance of behavior change and awareness to support the delivery of the Emirate's water strategy, active stakeholder participation, and providing essential data necessary in the decision making process with regard to the sustainable management of water resources in the region.
AAU launches “Suqya Zayed” initiative
As part of ongoing events in celebration of the Year of Zayed, the Deanship of Student Affairs at Al Ain University, Al Ain Campus, launched an initiative entitled “Suqya Zayed” distributing bottles of water and other cold drinks to laborers working outside during the afternoons.
The initiative aimed to contribute to reducing the effects of the summer heat on those laborers and to increase their feelings of wellbeing. It also reflects the spirit of the Year of Zayed 2018, and the good principles and values instilled in the UAE community by the late founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
AAU Wins First Place in Environment Competition
Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) organized an exhibition of the Annual Environment Competition entries. H.H. Sheikh Hazza bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H Sheikh Yas bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water also attended the opening ceremony.
During the ceremony, the (EAD) honored 101 participants in the 11th Annual Environment Competition 2011/2012. The competition, organized by the (EAD), aims at increasing environmental awareness among school and university students and enlightening them about the most important environmental problems in the UAE as well as the world. The competition also seeks to enhance the students’ role in serving the environment through enabling them to express their views and thoughts and to propose possible solutions to environmental problems threatening their lives and communities.
The AAU student Yousef Al Ali, from the College of Business Administration, received the First Place award in Photography. The winning photograph, of the mangroves in Abu Dhabi, was a distinguished one calling for thoughtful appreciation of the surrounding nature and increased awareness for the protection of mangroves.
On his part, the student, Yousef Al Ali, expressed his appreciation to AAU for the support it extends with regard to extracurricular activities through encouraging students to participate in competitions such as the Environment Competition.
“Sustainable Universities Initiative” at Al Ain University
The College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences at Al Ain University, Al Ain campus, hosted Ms. Amani Bin Humaid, Ms. Aisha Al Mazroui, Coordinators of the Sustainable Universities Initiative at Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, and Mr. Ahmad Al Rmaithi, Representative of Borouge, to present an awareness lecture on sustainable universities initiative implemented by the EAD in cooperation with Borouge, in the presence of the faculty members and students.
This initiative aims to increase sustainable practices in Abu Dhabi's universities through a range of elements, first; Green audit, includes five species land, climate change, biodiversity, water and waste. The agency provides intensive training for university students by forming teams of interdisciplinary students. Second: Sustainability Measures Project (SAP): the agency establishes a student club at each university to undertake an environmental project that benefits the community. Third: The Green Youth Council: Students from different universities and scientific disciplines meet periodically to discuss ideas for building sustainable communities. The Council is recognized by various international organizations, including the World Summit in Japan, a forum where youth can discuss innovative ideas and projects that can promote sustainable societies for our future generations.
The aim of this lecture is to contribute positively in developing a sustainable environment and climate change issues which attract the attention of all countries, including the United Arab Emirates.
In addition, Al Ain University is keen to strengthen partnership with government, private and environmental institutions to raise environmental awareness and sustainable development.
Al Ain University Participates in 3rd Arabian Tunnelling Conference
The College of Engineering and Information Technology at Al Ain University participated in the third Arab Conference on ‘Expenses’ which was organized by the Engineers Association under the Patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance and Commission Chairman, in cooperation with the International Association for Expenses in the presence of officials from governmental departments and private institutions and a group of experts and specialists in the field of infrastructure and expenses spending from the region and around the world.
During the opening ceremony of the Conference, which is held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai, the University has been honored through its representative, Dr. Nazih Khaddaj Mallat, the Dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology as an academic partner of the Conference. Also, a number of faculty members from the College participated in the "Young Engineers Forum" held at the Conference so that the college students share experiences and conversations with colleagues from other universities and engineering institutions. Dr. Nazih added that it is the University’s constant concern to support scientific conferences throughout the State and to strengthen relations with the local Engineering Associations.
